As the rules keep changing - each of us will have to modify what we do to keep our rankings.  Organic Content (see this months INC. Magazine article) is the best way to ensure rankings

I agree about the content. We here in the Atlanta Real Estate market need to be able to adjust as the changes are being made ot maintain our rankings on our websites.

Thanks, Jay, from a fan! The incestuous real estate linking diagram is very interesting.

Jay,

This is an excellent representation of good and bad reciprocal linking.   Thank you for posting this.

I have noticed many invitations to reciprocal link around Active Rain lately, some looking to set up groups, many already participating in them.

I am featuring this post in the hopes that it will save some of our members from being caught in this trap.

Just as an FYI, Yahoo banned the entire Advanced Access network 2 years ago.  Many of us, like myself, were not included in the nasty linking program they pushed monthly in thier newsletters.  We were punished anyway.

It is 2 years later, Yahoo has not yet released the Advanced Access members.  Advanced Access has not gone to bat with Yahoo to even release those of us that did not participate.  So I am going to take this a step further.

If you have somebody else managing your website, you absolutely must supervise them, be pro-active in the management of that site and understand that you can suffer for their actions as well as profit from them.

Very good points.  We too were punished by Yahoo for the actions of others.

Hi!

Thanks for the research.  The schematic certainly helped me understand why Google would care about improper linking.  Good feature!

Thanks for sharing. I definitely don't want to get penalized.

being hit by a G penalty is something everyone should avoid and some should be slapped with.

This penalty actually appeals to my sense of fairness. It is nice to know that the agents who are all form and no substance will be penalized. I like that.

That was good info. A number of years ago, I added my name (site) to realestateabc and valuecom. Those are the only 2 directories I joined. In the subsequent years, lots of directories have added my site to their list but I've not added their widget to my web site.

Will I be penalized for that since I have no control over all those other directories?

Should I remove the two widgets for realestateabc and valuecom? (I don't use P2A or AA).

Jay,

I guess incest is not a good thing (from one of the articles) :-). I can see the reasons behind the ban. However, I'm not sure the consumer really benefits from this. When we moved from WI to AZ we asked our WI agent for a AZ contact. See, that is what a good agent has - a national network of qualified agents. I can understand cracking down on abuse, but it will also hurt the sincere folks out there.

Thanks,
Shailesh

The Google Pagerank has really messed up the internet. The internet was based on natural linking to sites that deserved to be linked to. Google created a monster of a problem when they decided to place such a high value on links.

Well I had better get my link in Orlando Real Estate and Investment Property :)

Posted by Jeffrey Funk (Realty Executives Central Florida) over 2 years ago
Wow, that is pretty severe.  It does, in some ways, level the playing field a bit but many people used the links innocently enough and with many invitations from other players.  I still get reciprocal link requests on almost a daily basis.  Good to know that my not granting the requests is paying off.

Wow...that was great. I can see why they penalize it. At first, I was wondering why it was a big deal. The second article explained it so much better!

Google has updated their guidelines to address linking too.
